DuPage, which is the largest independent doctors’ group in Illinois, announced Steve Nelson as its new CEO on Tuesday. Nelson was previously CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a division of UnitedHealth Group.
“Steve is a visionary healthcare leader who is aligned with our mission of taking great care of patients,” said Mike Pacetti, who has served as interim co-CEO during the last 14 months, in a news release. “We conducted a selective and thoughtful search for a new CEO and are confident that Steve will lead our organization to its next phase of growth and success.”
Nelson, 62, has also served in executive roles with Henry Ford Health System and Intermountain Healthcare.
Nelson replaces Michael Kasper, DuPage’s former CEO, who died by suicide at the age of 46 in May of last year. Kasper also ran health insurance plans before joining DuPage.
Kasper joined the Downers Grove-based medical group in 2010, leading the practice through a period of rapid growth. During Kasper’s time at DuPage, the group grew from a few hundred doctors to more than 700. Under Kasper’s watch, DuPage became the largest independent doctors’ group in Illinois at a time when many small, independent practices have been joining larger hospital systems.
